General Conditions

The Unique conditions of our Region, the weather, geography, winds, make us suggest the following:

A) Medical requirements:
The purity of our lands and the lack of pollution, create a natural protection for our visitors, however, given the isolation of the area, we recommend to always carry with you a small first aids kit, with the following basic items: Sunscreen, Mosquito Repellent, Antispasmodic, Aspirin, Disinfectant, Bandages.

B) Weather and Geographic Location:
Chilean Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego occupy the south end of the American, and part of the Antarctic Continents, going from the 53º south parallel , all over the West side of Tierra del Fuego and the south and western Archipelagos. In Patagonia, temperature varies according to the season: Summer is often characterized by strong winds and temperatures that go from the 11ºC to 15ºC, while in Winter the winds soothe, and the temperatures reach 0ºC to -15ºC.

C) Flora and Fauna:
Due to the fact that the Colonization process is still incomplete, there are still numerous virgin areas in both the Continental and Insular territories, which has allowed the retaining of large areas untouched by mankind, and these ecosystems have remained alien to human intervention.
Ancient pre-Antarctic Forests, Guanacos, Penguins, Condors, Pumas, Beavers, Foxes, Seals, Whales and many other, make up this wonderful Patrimony.

D) Food:
The strong Pioneer influence, together with the great quality and clean environment, make of our gastronomy one of the most interesting on the country.

Excellent smoke dishes, sea products such as the Centolla (en. Spider Crab) or countryside such as the Patagonia Lamb, allow our tourists a large number of delicious dishes.

Clothing and Equipment:
Nights and days in Patagonia tend to be cold, so we always recommend our visitors to bring warm and waterproof clothes, hiking boots, gloves and caps, a little lantern and, when possible, a multipurpose tool.

E) Approach Roads:

By Air: There are several flights that daily connect Punta Arenas and our Capital City, Santiago, as well as other southern cities. It is also possible to find connections to Argentina.

By Land: From the nearest cities in Argentina (Calafate-Río Gallegos- Río Grande and Ushuaia.) If you’re coming from the north side of our country, you must go through Argentinean Territory.

By Sea: From Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales by Ferry, with weakly frequencies. The trip takes 3 days of wonderful navigation.
